Here you'll find my my astrophotography work - images of the stars, nebulae, and planetary objects in the night sky.  Astronomy was my first love as a child, and hopefully that is reflected in the images I capture of the night sky.

Imaging the night sky is a time consuming task, as many exposures are captured over the course of an evening, then "stacked" to average out the detail and noise in the final photograph. All the images here were captured this way and I'm happy to provide more info on the workflow on this upon request.

Picture
The "Great Orion Nebula" (Messier 42) in the constellation Orion is a diffuse nebula 1,300 light years from Earth. It is a birthing place for stars, the core being where newly formed stars are burning brightest

Picture
The Pleiades (Messier 45) or "Seven Sisters" is a an open star cluster 410 light years from Earth. The hot, blue stars light up the reflection nebula in and around the cluster.
Picture
Andromeda (Messier 31) is a barred spiral galaxy 2.5 million light years from Earth. This image show the m110 sattelite galaxy caught in Andromeda's gravitational orbit. It is thought the the Milky Way is on a distant collision course with Andromeda in the far future.

Picture
The Horsehead and Flame nebulae in the Great Orion complex, are the most recognisable objects in the near night sky. The horsehead is part of another larger star forming region, and provides a fantastic focal point in the Orion constellation for both observation and photography

Astrophotography kit:

The gear used in astro work is the same as in all my photography except for one necessary tool - the tracking mount.

Camera :   Canon 6D full frame
Lens :        Canon 70-300 f4-5.6L
Tripod :    Giottos silk Road carbon fibre 8 ply
Mount :    Sky-watcher StarAdventurer Pro 2i - This is an equatorial tracking mount designed to match the earth's rotation and allow long exposures without star trailing.

Software : Deep Sky Stacker
                   Starnet++
                   Photoshop 2022
                   Lightroom 2022
